Dinner with Elvis by Francesca - February 2016 Scholarship Essay
If I could have dinner with any historical figure I would choose Elvis Presley. Yes Elvis Presley, not George Washington, the first president and founder of these great United States, but “the King of Rock and Roll” himself. Musically speaking Elvis Presley is one of the most well recognized solo artists in the business. Better known as “The King of Rock and Roll”, he made his debut with Love Me Tender in 1956. Not only a rock and roll singer, he also recorded pop, gospel, and blues, selling a total of 600 million records worldwide and winning 3 Grammys.
Elvis Presley stood out in his teenage years, growing out his sideburns and wearing flashy clothes, particularly his iconic tight black leather pants. Aside from his tight pants, Elvis stole the heart of almost every American teenage girl out there; you could say he was the Justin Bieber or One Direction of our time.
I’d want to sit down and have dinner with Elvis Presley because I want to relive his career through the eyes of “the King” himself. I don’t know what would be on the menu, but his favorite peanut butter and banana sandwich would be dessert. I would have so many questions for him, but I’d probably be too anxious to ask them all because “the King” himself would be right there in front of me. I’d ask him why did he choose the tight pants?, What was it like to be bombarded by teenage girls at every concert?, What was it like to change music forever?, Why music over any other promising career?, How did you know you chose the right record label?, What was it like to be on the radio and television?, Was it hard to stay humble after becoming so popular?, and finally What kept you going after all the controversy people put fourth about you?. I think I’d expect him to be this stuck up celebrity like every other one now in days, but I think he would be a real genuine person. He is an inspiration to me because he worked up from nothing and became something. Playing saxophone and flute for 7 years of my life, I have a close connection and understanding to music. I of course had music lessons, but he didn’t he was self taught and played by ear, which in my experiences is hard to do. He is a historical person, perhaps not the way a president is, but he is in the music industry and had an impact on he lives of many people.
