Lessons from a new college student by Frances - December 2022 Scholarship Essay

In 2022, I started my first semester of college. For multiple years leading up to this, I was set on studying elementary education. But, as the semester went on, I learned there were better fits than this. I started to consider what other options I had and how I would have more career paths with a different degree. Ever since I was young, I have been extremely interested in true crime and learning about the psychology of murderers. So, I took this in stride and decided to switch to a psychology degree with a minor in criminal justice or criminology. When I switched my degree, I felt a sense of relief, which taught me a lesson I think was important about finding the right fit. I have also always struggled with creating lasting friendships, but since I've gotten to college, I’ve met the people I feel I fit right in with.
I have developed two rules to follow in my new adult life. The first is “protect your peace.” This means putting your well-being and mental and physical health first. This rule has helped me feel more mentally healthy and has shown me not to keep relationships damaging my “peace.” The second rule is to not wait around for others. This could be taken however the shoe fits in your situation. This often has meant not letting myself be the only one putting effort into friendships, thinking that eventually, the person will reciprocate the effort.
