Philosophy as a Required Course by Fortunate - June 2018 Scholarship Essay
Prior to taking Philosophy, I believe that areas of my frontal lobe were untapped as I was oblivious to my ability to think deeply about things taken for granted daily. It helped me make sense of the universe, world, my being, and reality. Being aware of how you as an individual thinks helps you to maneuver through life. In this digital day and age it is very refreshing to have healthy debates about various matters in a classroom setting compared to in the comment section of social media-- not to mention more effective. In-depth examination of questions regarding our existence is done best with real discussion.
Philosophy is not a class you take for a semester then forget about later on down the line, it can be used everywhere including different majors; it is a beneficial subject that ultimately makes you a better thinker so tying in Philosophy with undergraduate bulletins will improve a student’s chances of being successful in academia. Even in the workforce it is useful because most fields require clear and concise communication, analysis, persuasion, and engagement through practicing valuable skills learned in Philosophy. It is a win-win and everyone can positively gain a lot from taking this class.
The course is not just for your own critical thinking process but understanding another person’s thinking too. The United States of America is a melting pot of religions, socioeconomic backgrounds, cultures, and people who inevitably come from different walks of life. Understanding yourself helps you understand and relate to others which is another of the many goals of Philosophy. Though I elected to take Philosophy it is because of the above reasons that I without hesitation believe it should be a required class. It is safe to say that the course is bound to affect the course of your life.
