Milk Doesn’t Always Do the Body Good by Flynn - May 2022 Scholarship Essay
When I was six months old I had my first anaphylaxis reaction. I obviously don’t remember that but I remember the reactions I’ve had the last 15 years.
I am severely allergic to any milk protein. Yes, the obvious stuff like milk, cheese, & ice cream. But also the tricky stuff where the milk ingredient is hidden, like in most breads, & lots of snacks and desserts.
Life isn’t easy when you know your ability to breathe depends on reading every label. But being at home is the easy part.
Going to social events, restaurants, and even school, poses the most problems.
Will another student have a birthday treat I can’t have? Will our class be rewarded with a pizza or ice cream party? Will a restaurant say something is dairy free but it’s not?
This has also meant having to say no to so much. Watching other people eat something around me and knowing there’s no way I can join them. Or a restaurant learning it’s my birthday & the singing gang coming to reward me with a candled scoop of ice cream I have to slide away.
Knowing there’s not much I can do to control others has reminded me that I am in control of me. I have to be careful and responsible. It has made me stronger, self-reliant, & even courageous.
So please, hold the cheese.
