An Honest Inquiry by Flora - February 2016 Scholarship Essay
Although there are a great many historical figures that enrapture my mind, if given the chance, I would adore sitting down for dinner with Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln had a way with language that enraptured and motivated the hearts of thousands and I would love to have dinner with him to hear his thoughts about literature in general and his thoughts on current political matters.
As it stands, Abraham Lincoln was one of the best orators America has seen. Through his self-taught mastery of the English language, Abraham Lincoln moved and, to this day, continues to move the hearts of millions. Every syllable uttered, every word, every sentence, was a masterpiece. The words that Lincoln spoke, spoke to both the mind and the heart, leaving listeners with a clear message and a motivation to act. Although he is not linked with writers such as Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, Lincoln possessed the same moving and memorable qualities that keep them in our hearts today. Growing up and learning about Lincoln sparked the profound interest in English that continues to burn fiercely in my heart today. I continue to be fascinated with his legacy and, if given the chance to sit down with him for dinner, I would be over the moon just to hear his thoughts on any piece of literature. To be able to speak to the man that inspired my voracious appetite for books, would be breathtaking. Lincoln had a profound gift with speech, and just to be in his presence and to hear him talk about anything really would be invaluable.
On another note, I would love to hear what Lincoln would have to say to the existing political affairs. What would he think of the current President, Barack Obama? What would he have to say about who’s in the running for President? How would he react to Donald Trump? How would he react to a woman in the competition? To hear his thoughts on current politics would certainly be a fascinating conversation.
Realistically, there is no chance of this ever occurring, but if there was a possibility, I would indefinitely be inclined to choose Abraham Lincoln as my dinner guest because of his spectacular use of language and the curiosity to hear his honest thoughts on the current state of political affairs.
