Intro to Business with Concentration in Wealth Management by Fernandez - June 2018 Scholarship Essay

Because I am a student at one of the top universities in the nation, Tuskegee University, I am afforded the opportunity to receive instruction in areas that many college students and millennials have little to no knowledge of. This past semester, I had the opportunity to be an inaugural student in Andrew R. Brimmer School of Business and Computer Science’s first semester of offering BUS 210, an introduction to business with a concentration in wealth management. At first mention of this class, I hastened at the opportunity, being that the Black and Latino community is often uneducated in these aspects of life. I took it upon myself to gain knowledge in this field of study if I were to make a difference for myself and my community.
The class offered knowledge in a variety of business tactics including business plan strategies, investing, budgeting, stock exchange, tax plans and even something as simple as credit management. The knowledge learned in this class was more meaningful at times than my own major seemed to be: I learned how to manage my finances, properly invest, and propose business plans that would attract the right potential investors. Every person that took this class can attest for the need for a second semester due to our teacher’s vast knowledge of the subject manner. Once completing this class, I became extremely invested in creating business and investment plans for myself, as did my fellow inaugural classmates.
Being students in this class made us campus gurus to friends on how they could use simple strategies to start business plans and begin investments. This class offers valuable information every student, no matter what background, should be afforded the opportunity to learn. It is never too late to dream big, learn new skills, and get a business goal off the ground!
