Being An Overcomer by Faith - June 2016 Scholarship Essay

My sophomore year of high school an opportunity came my way to be able to graduate an entire year early. Through good grades, hard work, and a few extra classes, I was able to get a head start on my college education and career. Although many people did not support my decision to grow up just a little bit earlier than majority of my peers, I am so thankful for the decision I made three years ago.
I had to take a couple online classes to be able to skip a grade; so that meant I had sports, full schedule at school, and an online class senior year. The busy schedule turned out to be more exhausting and hard work than I initially anticipated. My grades were and are extremely important to me, and I made that very clear senior year by the time and effort I put into all my classes. It got too difficult to remain straight A's and be captain of the volleyball team. I ended up deciding to quit my senior year of volleyball so that I could have major academic success during my last year of high school. My team and coach were upset, but in the end I know it was the right decisions.
Although prioritizing my education over my love for athletics was difficult, it was more than worth it. Because of my grades in high school I was able to exempt many classes during my freshman year at Sinclair Community College, that caused me to be able to enter into the Dental Hygiene Program as soon as possible.
The lesson I learned through this experience is that even though it’s hard, making the right decisions is always worth it. I was blessed enough to see the benefits shortly after I made my decision, but I know that might not always be the case. I am aware that even though it might take time to reap the benefits; it will be worth it.
