Overcoming Negativity by Faith - June 2016 Scholarship Essay

For years my least favorite subject was math. However I always managed to receive a "B" with minimal effort. This all changed for me my senior year of high school when I reached Ms. Robinson's pre-calculus class. I thought I would be able to coast by without really studying or taking thorough notes. I was in for a rude awakening.
The first lesson was packed with examples. I had to force myself to stay focused and make sure that my notes were clear. As the year progressed the lessons became more lengthy and full of examples. I took notes and paid attention in class but I never studied at home. I remember thinking " I never had to study very hard in my previous math classes so why should I start now ?". I quickly found out why I should start studying at home when I received my first assessment grade. It was horrible and so was my attitude towards pre-calculus class.
Every time there was an assessment there was a boy in my class who always asked me "Are you ready to fail ?" and I would reply "Yeah". I had no faith in my abilities and my test grades reflected that. I decided that I was going to stop feeling sorry for myself and start studying.
When I knew of an upcoming test I would study an hour a night up until the test. My test grades were not spectacular but I began to see improvement. I began telling the boy in my class that I was ready to pass the test. I realized that whatever I allowed myself to think and say would eventually manifest itself in my life. I overcame my challenging pre-calculus class by allowing my negative attitude to fade, learning to appreciate the challenge and becoming a more positive person.
