The Benefits of Studying Abroad by Faith - March 2016 Scholarship Essay

Benefits of Studying Abroad

Many may be opposed to allowing college students to study aboard. After all, this is typically the time in our lives when we first live away from home. Although it may be scary to parents allow their children to move far away, especially out of the country, there are so many benefits that make this a worthy venture.
Cultural awareness is a skill that can be used throughout your life. Being able to explore a world where those that may speak a different language, have different customs and even eat different foods than those that we are used to can create an awareness and a respect for different ways of life. Cultural diversity is required in the workplace and our community in order to be able to respect and value others. Studying abroad is an amazing way to acquire this awareness.
As you become more familiar with different places and people, studying abroad can also promote a sense of self-discovery. Beginning to decide what you like and what you want to pursue can open up thinking about your purpose and how you fit into society, both at home and away. Exploring things that may or may not make you comfortable can assist in making decisions later in life.
Unless you are in military, this may be one of the few opportunities that you may have to actually travel, see different parts of the world and interact with other people from different walks of life. Language acquisition is a valuable benefit that can be used throughout your life. The majority of the world speak multiple languages and being immerged is one of the best ways to become fluent. Being bilingual can give you an edge when competing for jobs and put you in a better position in the global market.
Yes, there are some concerns when making the decision to study abroad. It can be dangerous being in a strange place without friends and family around for support. Maneuvering in a foreign country may be challenging as you, not only learn and use more of the language, but of the culture as well. You must learn and abide by the laws, learn and understand traditional customs, and potentially give up what you know and live.
But all in all, the benefits outweigh the risks, at least in my opinion. Students should be given the amazing opportunity of studying abroad.
