Public Speaking by Ezequiel - May 2026 Scholarship Essay

I recall a time in my life where public speaking was a big phobia for me. My voice would crack, my hands would sweat, my body would shake, it was like my whole body was screaming to get me to stop speaking. I would have to overcome my fear of public speaking since I was going to become a leader in my school's Christian Faith Club and that required good communication skills. My first few times going in front of the classroom to speak were scary, I would blank out and rush, the feeling of having about twenty eyes staring and you and expecting something put lots of pressure on me. I would prepare my speeches a week before but when It came to deliver my faith based speech I would just crumble and fail to deliver it. I felt so disappointed I would remember a leader who was able to speak so fluently and confidently, I wanted to be like him. Not worrying about what others think of me but being able to focus on my purpose for my message. When I realized the reason people came to the club it changed my whole perspective, they came for many reasons such a as conviction, depression, hurt not to see me speak but to receive help. Once I realized I was able to provide comfort to these people through my own experiences I knew I had to overcome my fear of public speaking. I realized everyone is human and every human makes mistakes, I am no different from those people and those people are not different from me. Now going up and speaking in front of people especially those you know I still feel a bit insecure but this time its different I know I must deliver a message that could help people so I hold me head up high and make sure to smile so the people who are going through hard times would feel a sort of welcome and relief. A major experience of public speaking was when I prayed with a microphone in my hand with over hundred plus students, I felt a joy that I was chosen to speak in such an important event so I knew I had to speak well and I did that by speaking from the heart, I did blank out at one point but it was fine since I got my message across.
