Helping Animals: The Impact of a School-Assisted Dog Program by Everly - June 2026 Scholarship Essay
For my project, I would like to start a program at school where juniors or seniors help foster a shelter dog. The dog would come to school during the day and spend time with students. At the end of the day, the dog would go back to the shelter or a foster home. On weekends, one student and their family would take care of the dog until it was time to bring it back. This would continue until the dog finds a forever home.
I think this would be a great project because it helps both the dog and the students. Many shelter dogs spend most of their time in kennels. Being around people every day could help them become more comfortable and friendly. It could also help them get adopted faster.
Students would take turns helping care for the dog. We could feed it, give it water, take it outside, and make sure it is comfortable. Everyone would have a job so the responsibility is shared. This would teach students how to work together and take care of something that depends on them.
I also think having a dog at school could make school more enjoyable. A lot of students feel stressed because of tests, grades, sports, and other activities. Spending time with a dog can help people feel calmer and happier. It could make the school environment feel more positive.
The dog would benefit too. It would get attention, exercise, and time around people instead of sitting in a shelter all day. The more comfortable a dog is around people, the better chance it has of finding a good home.
Overall, I think this would be a fun and helpful project. Students would learn responsibility while helping an animal in need. Most importantly, it would give a shelter dog a better chance at finding a loving family and a forever home.
