Benefits of College Essays by Ever - October 2024 Scholarship Essay

Do I believe it’s possible to succeed in life without a college degree? Possibly. Is it rare? Yes. Take the case of Richard Montanez, the Hot Cheetos “inventor”, he was born into an immigrant family and didn’t even graduate from high school. Before he was hired at Frito-Lays he worked as a laborer, then at the age of 18 he was hired as a janitor. Eventually making it to a senior machinist operator. During his time there he came up with the idea to create something new when, according to him, an assembly machine put out a plain batch of cheetos. He took these plain cheetos home and experimented on them, eventually coming up with the flamin’ hot cheetos. This is all to say a college degree isn’t necessary to make it in life, but it’s really rare to get opportunities like his and actually pushing the idea into something bigger. So would I recommend going to college and seeking a degree. Yes, I think your chances of success increases compared to everyone without one and it gives you more opportunities in different fields. At the same time, I understand that college isn’t for everyone and that you should only attend if it aligns with your career goals or if you're confident it’s your only path to success. According to the article, “Is College Worth It? Consider These Factors Before Enrolling,” written by Garret Andrews, he says, “college graduates still earn higher wages and have lower unemployment rates than workers with only a high school diploma.” In my view college is going to be necessary for my career, as a data analyst, and I think I’ll be able to learn a lot more and specialize in familiar fields increasing my knowledge. Especially with how competitive my career is I do believe it’ll increase my chances than those without a degree. Not just that I see college as a way to network and learn more about myself.
