Equal Educational Opportunities by Evelyn - February 2020 Scholarship Essay
My trip to the Dominican Republic through the Global Glimpse program this summer was truly a humbling experience. I have been fortunate enough to live in a country where education is a right every child is able to obtain. Unfortunately, being able to attend grade school and a university is not an option for children living in most developing countries.
During my time in the Dominican Republic, I had the opportunity to give English tutoring to adolescents my age. At the end of each class we would socialize and it was there when I discovered the majority of them were compelled to pursue a career in baseball; it was their only hope of prospering in life. A girl who was my age said she was planning on competing on a softball scholarship for a place to study in Puerto Rico or the U.S. or else she would have no other chance.
They are students like me, students who yearn to make a name out of themselves with a degree. However, it seemed we lived in different worlds and the inequity of opportunities infuriated me. Their odds of going to college after high school are extremely low, mainly due to a lack of financial stability in their families and an insufficiency of academic resources.
If I were to start a nonprofit organization, it would be for the benefit of students in developing countries who wish to study in a university. I want every child to be offered the same opportunities children all over the world receive. No one should ever be deprived of the right to an education. We in the United States are blessed to have college guidance and financial aid that make it possible to attend college. It is slowly becoming common for even low-income students to get a college education. We have an option. They do not.
Sometimes we take it for granted because we live in a comfortable life with education being our right during childhood. This realization urged me to want to contribute to a change to live in a world where the gap between economic inequality among countries can diminish in the future. An organization that gives every child access to school would enable me to set them on a path towards success and prosperity.
