Porterville Academy of Health Sciences by Evelyn - December 2019 Scholarship Essay
I am part of this organization called Porterville Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS). This organization has changed my life since there are many opportunities for students to learn about the health field. As a freshman in high school I was afraid of joining since I had heard it was one of the hardest pathways and I didn't feel like I was smart enough. I wanted to drop out the first year since I thought it was becoming too difficult, but I am glad I didn't. I have been impacted greatly since we are put into health classes that allow us to interact with different careers in the medical field.
During my time in PAHS I have accomplished and have been encouraged so much by teachers and my family to always to strive for the best and never give up. The teachers that teach the CTE courses are teachers that have had a career in the medical field and we are able to learn the correct way to do things. I was afraid to be enrolled in Advanced Placement classes since I felt like I was not smart enough. My junior year I decided it was time for me to enroll. I enrolled in United States History and Spanish Language and Culture. I was able to maintain good grades in those classes as well as my other classes. Now in my senior year I am enrolled in Spanish Literature and Culture, English 101A and in the following semester I will be enrolled in English 101B to earn units for college.
I have been able to do internships with Sierra View Hospital where I was put into the MRI department. I enjoyed being able to learn and set up the room for patients. During the summer, I enrolled into the Nursing Assistant class which was an amazing opportunity for me to interact with different residents. There was 9 students that successfully completed the program and were recommended by our instructor to take the state boards. We all worked hard while doing our clinical hours we were there early in the morning and got off in the afternoon we did this for two weeks at two different facilities. Now as a senior, we have the opportunity to do ride-a-longs with the local fire department, imperial ambulance and hospital. I have completed my ride-a-longs with both the fire department and imperial ambulance. I learned a lot with the fire department and some stuff I already knew , but it was an amazing experience. I also learned a lot with imperial ambulance. I have had so many amazing opportunities with this organization.
