My Finals Routine by Eve - May 2016 Scholarship Essay
When studying for finals I gather my classwork, notes, text book and any writing supplies I might need and then find somewhere comfortable to sit. First I make a short page or two of notes to write down anything I think I know. I then quickly compare my short notes to the detailed notes I made throughout the semester. Anything that I forgot to write that is important or that I wrote down incorrectly, I go back over. If I still do not understand it after thoroughly re-reading my notes, I look for the information in the textbook. After I understand the concept, and have reviewed all my notes, I pull out any previous tests and work sheets and study the questions that I missed. If I answer the question correctly, I move on and if I do not I open the text book and practice similar problems. Once I feel that I know everything, I get onto the internet and search for practice exams.
Another thing I do is keep a to do list so I know what I need to study on what day. I plan for the days where I have few classes or long periods of time between classes to be my study days. For about half of the time I plan to study, I study for the final that is first and for the other half I study the class that I am struggling the most in. I find that the best trick, however, is to take breaks to get a snack or walk around and let your mind clear for a few minutes. Listening to classical music while studying when there is no quiet space available or if long periods of silence are not your thing is also helpful.
