A Functional Education by Evangeline - April 2015 Scholarship Essay
The purpose of an education is to teach you how to think, how to process information, how to problem solve, how to access and utilize the resources we have available. I often hear professionals say they don’t use what they learned in school in their current position so, in my opinion, an education isn’t necessarily to learn the exact facts to ready you for a career, but how to adapt successfully in one’s job, whatever field that may be.
Part of an education is to teach you how to work well with others. In class, we have group projects and presentations. Learning how to deal with a lazy teammate is equally as important as trying to present to your class about Marketing 101. In the working world, you need to know how to work with other co-workers and your bosses in order to be successful. Education is more than the classroom; it is also all the things that happen outside through internships, and everyday life. An education is what makes a person well rounded; it gives you the core skills and facts necessary to understand certain subjects, but it teaches you how to think and learn in the future. And the most exciting part about an education is that it never has to end. There will always be learning opportunities available if you wish to take them.
