My Motivation by Evan - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

Of course I would like to say that I 100% motivate myself and am always focused, but that just wouldn't be true. Ever since early middle school my mom has always been the person that keeps me focused. My definition of motivation might be different than yours. Some might be motivated through a goal they would like to accomplish or want to just get some work out of the way so they can do other things, but my Motivation is more forced. Although deep down I appreciate it and am thankful for it, my mom has always been there to yell at me to get my work done or been there to not let me get up from my desk until it is done. Although she has always done it because all wants is for me to be successful, I haven't always seen it that way.

Many long nights and extensive arguments have been had over my moms "motivation". There have been times where I have sat staring at a math worksheet or my computer screen for many hours just to spite her and not get my work done. Although this may not have been the most efficient use of my time, I definitely thought it was those nights. The arguments and grudges I held over her would be quickly forgotten about the next morning, until the same endless cycle would repeat once again the following or the night after.

Luckily for my mother I eventually grew out of this habit, and realized if I simply got my work done earlier I could avoid the whole ordeal. Along with my mother I also had my much more motivated older sister to help me. Oftentimes without my mom knowing my sister would complete my work for me, but with a price. whether that was me giving her my desert that night or getting to watch whatever she wanted to watch on T.V

During those elementary and middle school days I would often resent my mom for the night, just for her to be forgiven in the morning. I do truly appreciate all the "motivation" and work she put in to keep me focused, even though she probably doesn't realize. I even might go tell her about this essay I'm writing right now and thank her. Either way I can confidently say my mom has always been my biggest motivation and also what keeps me focused. Not only academically but in life in general.
