My First Love by Eva - February 2025 Scholarship Essay

I have always loved reading. Ever since I was a little girl and my grandma introduced me to the Princess Diaries series, I have loved to read. I would read during every summer between the school years. I would go to my local Boys' and Girls' club every summer and spend hours reading different books. Reading was a way I could get to understand the world in a new light and create worlds in my head that I got to explore. When I came into High school, I wanted to continue my interest in reading. I also wanted to understand more of how to analyze my books and find the deeper meanings and messages of my books. In my junior year when AP English Language and Composition was offered, I knew I wanted to take it to further my interest in reading, and it would additionally help me learn how to write well along with the reading. I knew that the class was going to teach me how to write essays and analyze things at a college level. I knew that it was going to help me when I got into college as well. Learning how to read and write well is an important part of college, and I knew taking advantage of this class would get me to a higher level so that it wouldn’t be something fresh to learn in college. While I was taking this course in school, I learned a lot of things that furthered my interest in reading and writing. I spent time learning rhetorical devices, developing a better understanding of reading, and developing my writing. I also read books that I would have never read if I hadn't taken the class. One book that stood out to me was Columbine. The book was really interesting and deepened my knowledge of the mental state of people and justice for victims. This also furthered my interest in majoring in criminal justice in college. The interest in reading further taught me how to expand my knowledge into the world, and I can use these qualities in college. (Word Count:350)
