Endless Distraction and Unlimited Possibility by Eva - March 2022 Scholarship Essay

It was my sophomore year and I had just created my first social media account. I eagerly found my friends' accounts to follow and began exploring Instagram. A few hours later, I was in shock. How could I have let myself spend a good portion of my day on an app? My quickly-accumulated pile of homework sat on my desk, forcing guilt and dread for how late I would have to stay up that night all because I spent too much time on my phone.
Distraction happens to all of us at some time and in some form, but I was ashamed of myself that I was distracted by a pastime that did not even bring me joy. Reflecting on this, I realize that the experience of staying awake past midnight in order to finish my homework should have become a lesson to me that would prevent future, similar events from happening. However, it did not.
I find myself interested in social media as a way to learn new information, discover accounts that I can learn from, and become inspired by people that have the same hobbies and passions as me. However, it is increasingly easy to lose track of time while using social media. On a few occasions, this has detrimentally affected my education. As my inaugural experience with Instagram proved, I have procrastinated homework because I am drawn in by the enticements of social media.
Even though social media has negatively affected my schoolwork at times, it has also shown itself to be advantageous to my learning. My perspective of the world is constantly being broadened by the seemingly endless scope of information and inspiration provided by these platforms. The curriculum-based education I receive at my high school cannot compete with the diverse facts and skills I have the ability to learn and develop from social media.
Balance is essential in order for social media to be effectively used while not taking over one's life. If it is allowed, it can easily replace the time needed for a successful education and career. If it is restricted, social media can bring important viewpoints and valuable variety to life.
