My Grandmother is my greatest supporter. by Ethan R. - March 2023 Scholarship Essay

Who is one person that has had a positive impact on your education and how did they impact you?

When I think about this question, the obvious answer would be my parents, but I think we often forget the unsung heroes who offer their time, effort, love and support without ever asking for anything in return.

For me, the person that has had the greatest impact on me, is my grandmother. She has been relentless in her positive support of everything I have done and want to do. From sitting in the rain on the sidelines watching me grow in every sport I ever played, to always pushing me to be a better person who cares for others more than I care for myself. My grandmother has always helped me with homework until it became too difficult for her. She worked with me in the yard as much as she could with practicing for whatever sport I was chasing at the time.

Now, chasing my dream to become a pilot, she sits beside me to encourage me to take the extra steps, study a little longer, schedule my flights in advance and in her own small way does what she can to financially support me so I can spend more time studying and less time working a part time job.

My grandmother doesn't just support me, she supports our whole family. While I have parents that also support me, they both work full time and are often on the go with my brother and I running for travel sports and educational events. I recall a great number of times she would bring lunches over after school for my brother and me. She would bring dinners so my parents could relax after work and not have to rush to cook a meal. My grandma often would tidy up my room and do up my laundry, knowing that our schedules were sometimes difficult to manage with travel sports and school activities.

Someday soon, I hope to be able to give back to her, to show her just how much her support has meant to me over the years. I cannot imagine growing up without her and I can't wait to show her the efforts and endless support from her made a difference in the path I intend to take with my education.

Phyllis Smith is my choice for the person that has had a positive impact and I hope that I can share with her one more win from a story of what she did for me.

I hope to be the man she sees me to be in the future.
