The Value of a College Education by Ethan - October 2024 Scholarship Essay
My mother was the first person in her family to attend college. She knew at a young age that she wanted to become an educator. There was no other consideration of a major for her. Unfortunately, her parents actually discouraged her from attending college due to financial burdens. They thought she would be better off as a secretary. She was determined and at one point worked four jobs to pay her tuition. Due to this factor, and many others, she encouraged all of her children to attend college. She supported and inspired life-long learning. She said everyone should at least give college a chance. It opened her eyes to other cultures, religions, and ideologies. I appreciate the encouragement from her to take Dual Credit classes in high school. Because of my mother, I will be graduating high school with an associates degree. When kids sometimes only think of today, my mother confronted me with looking into the future. I know I will have the possibility of a higher paying job with a college degree. I will be better equipped to support a family. I will meet people and learn about the world we live in. Above all, a college education will give me choices and opportunities. That is the most valuable thing a person can obtain.
