An Alteration In Performance by Ethan - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
If I had the opportunity to switch the role I have as a student with the teacher of one class, I would switch roles with my HL Biology teacher. Some may ask, "Why would you want to switch roles with such an experienced and perceptive person?” The reason is quite simple: biology is one of my favorite classes and has led me on a career path as a physician, and I would want to know the stress and preparation my teacher has to go through to teach us what she knows.
At a young age I became interested in science because of all the “cool experiments”. Once in middle school, where I could now take biology and health, I realized that there was more to science than experiments and explosions. I was just being introduced to a realm of health, wellness, human anatomy, and other functions of science that some overlook. I was especially interested in our health class where we were studying the human body and the simple functions of life. Once this class was through I finally understood more about the human system and body as a whole than most others did, and I soon found a passion for the study of all life: biology. Once in high school I applied for my higher-level biology course where I would learn about cells, evolution, body functions, biodiversity, and other understandings of the field of biology. What caught my attention through out the class is not only how hard we as students were working, but how hard my teacher had to work to prepare each lesson, each test, each essay, or taking the time to grade each and every assignment we handed in. The reason I would change places would to be in my teacher’s shoes, experience the stress and planning my teacher has to go through on a daily basis just so we can study what we love.
I would want to teach this class because while doing so, I feel I would deepen my understanding of the subject as I would have to keep in head of the class and prepare each and every class discussion and paper. This would help me learn more about my favorite subject than I would if I were listening to a discussion in class. Also, I would want to observe the class in a position of power and observe what the teacher has to deal with every class. What I mean by this is as a student, we act and behave a certain way because we are still adolescents and some still misbehave in the classroom. I would want to observe and watch which students do this, at what times, what actions are the most disruptive and who is disrupting the class. These are things that as a student we do not pay much attention to because we are among our peers and laugh at this. Once I observe, I would change those things and try to make the class as fluent as possible, that way those like me who really enjoy learning and paying attention can do so in the most effective conditions. I feel like as a teacher of my favorite class I would mostly focus on honing onto the issues with the class and fixing them for the teacher, but also for others and myself so we can learn in a more focused and organized environment. This will allow us to expand our knowledge of biology and also make the life of my teacher as easy as possible.
