Grateful for Flexibility by Esther - November 2020 Scholarship Essay

I am extremely grateful for the time flexibility that homeschool has allowed me. Most of the kids that I know are kept at school all day listening to a teacher. After school, they have homework, meaning their school takes just about the entire day. They then get up early to go to school the next morning. I am not bound by such restrictions. Not only am I able to use my time the way I want to, I also can work at my own pace rather than following a planned curriculum at a school that has many other kids to attend to.

First of all, I have a flexible schedule. Kids my age who are not homeschooled get consequences for being late to class or absent, and for not finishing homework on time. They also require a doctor’s note if they have a to skip class on account of medical appointments. Contrarily, when something conflicts with my regular school day, I can simply finish my work later or do extra the day before. This allows for music lessons, sports tournaments on a weekday, and even allows sleeping in after a late night.

Not only do I have weekly flexibility, but my education itself is very adaptable. There is a variety of opportunities to get ahead. I have spent quite a few summers continuing my schoolwork, not only to keep my brain active during the fun summer days, but also to work ahead. Along with that, I also have the opportunity to choose the curriculum that suits me best. I have switched between Math, Science and English curricula when the previous curriculum was ineffective. I have learned better and enjoyed learning much more than I would have thought.

I am thankful for flexibility in my education because it has taught me about time management, hard work, and figuring out the best method. God gave me a great opportunity in life, and I love how much I have learned throughout my educational journey
