What does attending college mean for you? by Essie - June 2013 Scholarship Essay

Attending a college would make an immense difference in my life because it would help me financially to obtain my degree in public policy. I view public policy as a concrete way to positively impact the lives of others. The initial impact would be beneficial to me as a private individual. Attending college would go a long way to alleviate some of the financial hardships placed on me and my family. I work hard to pay my bills, support my family and pay my tuition. My family has been very supportive of me in my endeavors, doing without and cutting back immensely on everyday things in order for me to pay for school so I could receive a degree in public policy. However, the secondary and long term impact of my degree in public policy would allow me the opportunity to have a greater impact on the larger community as I would work to research and develop policy beneficial to the community at large, especially underserved and rural communities. Because of the layout and the manner in which these communities are populated their voice in policy that impacts their lives is often lost or overshadowed. I’d like to be a part of them getting that voice back and attending college is my first help in helping my community.
