Nobel Prize recipients are ones who show outstanding character during the dawn of a generation which is vibrant in its struggle to counter the corruption and bleakness coating societies around the world. Recipients exemplify characteristics that give the world inspiration and hope. This year, the committee has decided on two attributes that the recipient of the Nobel Prize must possess: curiosity, and courage.

Curiosity is woven into the fabric of humanity. It is what allows us to continually explore new ways of life. In the future, when our world has shifted through decades of new technologies and social norms, curiosity is what will have made saying “the sky’s the limit” become more and more ridiculous, because we will have transcended our limitations. The human condition might even lie suspended on a ship one day. Instead of sailing the seas and oceans to explore our Mother’s land, this ship will swim through bubble gum Milky Ways and brush against stars. Or, it might orbit the earth like a glass marble spinning in an infinite circle, tied by gravity like the magnetic pull of two lovers.

In any version of the future, the vastness of our home, either on earth or in the universe, is exciting in its uncertainty. Humanity needs its members to have the curiosity that will inspire nations, and bring us into that future, where anything is possible. The recipient of the Nobel Prize must possess the curiosity that creates the desire and ambition to discover any concept or dream that many would consider too insurmountable to achieve.

Accompanied with curiosity, the recipient must additionally possess courage. It must be obvious to any that even when faced with seemingly impossible adversity, the recipient has shown the incredible inner strength to overcome those adversities with a courage that shines like a beacon of hope. The courage it takes for one person to continue making the world a more beautiful place, despite sacrifice or hardships is a quality that is as essential to existing as breathing.
