A decade from now… by Eryn - March 2025 Scholarship Essay

A decade from now, I envision myself as a successful college graduate, an established teacher, a loving wife, and devoted mother. These are not just dreams but they are goals that I am actively working to achieve. I believe that the path to success takes dedication, perseverance, and the willingness to learn. Education will play an important role in my life which I am determined to use as a stepping stone to build the life I desire.
I am currently planning to attend Spelman College which is the top Historically Black College in the United States. The opportunity to attend this prestigious institution will provide me with the knowledge and skills needed to become a successful educator. College is not only about academics but it is a space for personal growth, developing critical thinking skills, and gaining experiences that will help shape me into a well rounded individual. After spending most of my academic career as the minority in the building I would like to further my education in a space where my peers and teachers are able to connect me to the classroom and where I don’t feel like an outcast amongst other students. Graduating from Spelman College will give me a new insight on the world and equip me with the tools needed to navigate society as a young African-American female educator.
Education has always been a passion of mine and with only 7% of educators being African-American females I am more than determined to accomplish this. My goal as an educator is to inspire and guide the next generation of students to be wiser than I was. My classroom will be an environment where all students are valued, respected and held to the highest standards. I plan on immersing myself as well as my students into the communities and lives of their fellow classmates to foster an inclusive classroom environment. However, this all ties back to me continuing and pursuing higher education.
Education is the foundation supporting all of my goals. It will give me the knowledge and credentials I need to establish a fulfilling career, the confidence and independence to navigate life’s challenges, and the ability to build strong relationships with those in my future. Learning does not stop after earning a degree. It is a lifelong journey that will continue to shape me as an individual whether through formal education, professional training or personal experience, I am committed to growing and evolving becoming the best version of myself.
