Varsity Tutors Essay by Erin - February 2015 Scholarship Essay

One of the most challenging books I read in high school was The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. I read this my senior year and was required to write an essay on it. I chose this book because I am glad I had the opportunity to analyze it with my teacher and peers. I am glad I was exposed to this type of literature at the high school level. I think this book is important for high school students to encounter together as a class.

The Scarlet Letter was definitely the hardest book I was required to read in class. I think all high school students should read this in their high school classes because it is a classic and important to literature, but it is not a book that the average high school student will pick up, let alone finish on their own time. Reading this book in class will give the students an opportunity to go over the material with the teacher and other students. In college that opportunity isn’t always available and the learning is more dependent on the student themselves.

Reading The Scarlet Letter will expose the content of adult problems to students who are about to become adults. The novel will show them sufferings from the Puritan times are still present today. The students can then incorporate how society has changed over time and how we deal with publicity of sin. I think The Scarlet Letter is important to read as a high school student to get a well-known, hard-to-read, classic under their belt and prepare the students for college or the real world
