In Hope of Becoming a Well Rounded Educator by Erin - August 2022 Scholarship Essay

A life long goal of mine has always been to become an open minded and supportive teacher. Currently I am starting my first year at UMass Amherst as a transfer student from Holyoke Community College with a focus on Art-Education. During my time at Holyoke Community College, I was able to complete one semester as a full-time student who worked nights, but unfortunately I had to take a break to earn more money and support my studies. I would prefer to concentrate fully on my education in the future, and not have to work extra shifts at night or take another semester break to cover the costs. It is important to me that I am able to continue prioritizing my learning.
During this upcoming academic year, I plan to synthesize what I will be learning in my cultural anthropology and history courses into my art education work. I hope to learn more about diversity and different perspectives around the world to grow as an artist, academic thinker, and a person as a whole. By combining the knowledge I learn from all of my courses, I hope to develop new mindsets and ways of thinking to enhance my teaching abilities. I have decided to take on this challenge as a personal goal in hopes of one day becoming an understanding, well-rounded educator who is capable of teaching a variety of students.
With this scholarship money, I would be able to continue my academic journey, make connections between my studies, and one day provide students with the guidance and support that they need to prosper. Building my education is something I highly value–I hope to be able to spread what I learn in creative, thought provoking ways to others seeking an education as well.
