Be As Cool As a Cucumber by Erica - April 2016 Scholarship Essay
To my dear fellow younger students, if there is one thing I learned as a high-school student, it is that it is TOUGH surviving high school. Most students need to balance not only classes but also homework, part-time jobs, college applications, standardized testing, extracurricular activities, sports, and so much more other things that it is very easily to get frustrated. We, as students, can not stop doing these activities because our time in high school is beneficial for us. High School is the place that will prepare us for the future whether it is preparing for a job or college. High school is the place where adulthood begins. Therefore, that is why we need to persevere the best we can even though it may be difficult. So, to help you survive in high school I am going to give you this advice, "Always try to be as cool as a cucumber."
I have been living by this motto since I began high school. For me, situations and problems become even worst when you lose your head and become a hot tamale. For example, I am part of my high school's Key Club and every year our club holds a Benefit Show. This year, I happened to be an officer of the club so me plus four other officers were in charge of creating the whole show. Of course there were some mishaps that happened in the show like performers going missing and technical difficulties. So, anytime one of these unfortunate events happened I would become frustrated and hot-headed. When I was in this rage, I would cloud my judgement and nag over something that could be fixed with a simple solution. However, when I did calm down my mind cleared, and I finally saw how small that situation actually was and resolved it. Thus, my fellow peers, do not be like me in this situation and become so angry that you want to rip your hair off. Sometimes the most frustrating situations can not be fixed with more frustration. They can only be fixed if you keep a level head and try to "be as cool as a cucumber."
I know it is easier to be mad than happy when given the fact that work in high school seems to be endless. But do not worry fellow students, if you keep moving forward with an optimistic outlook, your high school career may be one of the best experiences you ever encounter. Peers please do not easily succumb to the temptations of frustration because that would just make problems more problematic. Please try your best to persevere, because if you do, you can possibly think clearer and easily fix problems. So, I wish all current and future high school students alike, good luck and "be as cool as a cucumber."
