"Overall, I learned a lot more about myself in that one semester than I did in the three and a half years in my home school because of the unique space in which I learned, experienced, and spent exploring another culture," recalls Carolyn Valtos (IES Adelaide, 1992). This individual, along with many others, has noticed the impact of a study abroad program. Over 90% of alumni study abroad students surveyed by The Institute for the International Education of Students said that after the trip they noticed an increase in their maturity, more self-confidence, and/or that the experience has impacted their world views. Studying abroad provides an immense amount of beneficial experience to engage the traveler for the rest of his/her life. Therefore, this incredible chance to learn should be required for college graduation. Studying abroad helps accumulate new connections, cultural knowledge, and personal insight that students wouldn’t get to experience without this opportunity.
The best opportunities are missed when individuals remain inside their comfort zones. Sometimes a push is needed to try new things, whether that be a push from a family member, mentor, or even a graduation requirement. A necessary tool for success in life is being able to function on one’s own. The people who explore these new situations and changes can better adapt to changes once returning to their regular life back home. Cultural knowledge can also be gained from studying abroad, which is increasingly more important due to globalization.
When studying abroad, students can explore. When students explore, they can learn, and when they learn, they grow. Nearly all students who complete a study abroad program report positive changes after this significant life experience. Based upon the noticeable differences study abroad students have observed after their time abroad, studying abroad must be heavily encouraged. Serious consideration should be given to making it a graduation requirement in order to assist individuals to become the best possible members of society.
