Eric-Isaiah Lunsford - My College Major by Eric-Isaiah - April 2025 Scholarship Essay
The college majors I plan to major in is screenwriting and animation. I chose these majors as I want to create my own cartoon show in the future. And I want to be hands on with the project with being an executive producer, writer, storyboarder and voice actor if possible. And by taking my major in college, I can learn how to become a producer by having the ability to work in the animation pipeline and experience the changes, difficulties and challenges you have to face when working on an animated production, just on a smaller scale and with less of a team behind me.
And this cartoon show will be more just a normal one. It’ll be one that the whole family can learn from and can teach about life events, different phonics, and something everyone can walk away from and learn something. In the modern world where Sesame Street went from sixty minutes to thirty minutes to being cancelled altogether due to tax writeoffs, educational shows are becoming less and less seen in the modern day and it's becoming disappointing the new youth doesn't have many new current educational shows for them.
My mother tells me stories about how when she was growing up, Sesame Street being on for an hour, Mr. Rogers Electric Company, Zoom cooking shows, Schoolhouse Rock. They were amazing, a plethora of things that kids could be watching and adults too, and they could learn something about it. And we have, we've come so far about, we've come so far from that, like Schoolhouse Rock, where between cartoons you learned about how a bill becomes a law. So many things that we don't do. Yes, cartoons are great, comedy is amazing, but sometimes there are lessons that should be learned that are not just “Don't do drugs”. Which is important, don't get me wrong, but I would love to use my platform to not only educate but entertain.
