Peace Promotes Unity by Eric - December 2018 Scholarship Essay

If I was on the Nobel Peace prize committee I believe there would be several characteristics a potential winner would need to possess. First, I feel as if the winner would have to be involved with their local community. I think that a person who wins this prize must be a genuine person who is addressing an actual need rather than chasing attention. This could be ensured by making sure that the candidates for the prize had several recommendation letters from people who could genuinely attest to the level of impact the winner had on the community. Although not completely foolproof this would hopefully allow the recipient to not only be highly intelligent, but also agreeable and pleasant to be around.
Secondly, I would make it a requirement that the person could show how they had promoted peace and a sense of community in the world. Ultimately, the mission of the Nobel Peace prize is written in Nobel’s will which states the prize should be awarded to the person who in the preceding year "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses". If this is not a requirement of a potential candidate than the whole integrity of the award.
Lastly, just because a person has met these requirements does not mean that they are deserving of the Nobel Peace prize. These are simply prerequisites that ensure the prize is given to a deserving candidate rather than a smart person who displays no kindness and is living a facade. Also, a Nobel Peace prize winner will eternally be looked to as a leader so this selection should be very in depth.
