The Class That Keeps on Giving by Eric - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
The teacher of a class has a prolific impact on the lives of their students. No matter what subject they teach, all lessons learned in the class can be used to help create a more well-rounded student. A teacher is one who can be looked up upon to guide students to thinking a certain way they do. This being said, if roles were reversed and I was put in the spot of a teacher, I would choose to teach sociology.
By definition, sociology is the study of social behavior or society, including its origins, development, organization, networks, and institutions . In this class, topics are explored and case studies are created to define the norms and boundaries of society that we are taught as a child but have no idea of until we actually think about them. Such topics include social structure, behavioral traits, and classification. When we learn about these things, we can look at all problems that occur from a different perspective. We do not refer to our natural instinct of blame, but rather look at society as a whole system of inter-working beings. This is why I believe that all students should be required to take this class. The reasons for choosing sociology stems from my experience in the world and communication between me and my peers. I would choose to teach this subject because I can give all of my knowledge that I have about sociology to my students and let them decide how to identify and classify a problem looking at in-depth reasons. After students have learned what I have taught them in my class, they can become better problem-solvers and really break things down to their elements to see why something occurred. This class will make them less likely to just look at the surface of a problem society faces, and this can change the world. Society as a whole would be less judgemental and more understanding of our differences. Teaching this one class will benefit the majority of society and this is the main reason I would choose to teach it. I want to make a difference in not only the lives of my students, but also the lives of society as a whole and this could be accomplished by teaching the class of sociology.
