My New Year`s Resolution: To Control My Media Craving by Emylee - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

New Years is a time of reflection and self-evaluation. In an attempt to better themselves, many people commit to goals. This year, I was no different than the others, I made various goals to improve myself mentally, academically, and physically. One of my 2016 goals, to spend less time on social media, will assist me in becoming a better student by reducing distraction, decreasing time wasted, and producing space for original thought and opinions.
By investing less time on social media, I will diminish distraction, a distraction that has previously held my academic achievement captive. All teens have experienced the irresistible urge to check Instagram or Twitter while attempting to accomplish homework that is viewed as tedious. If I can harness my impulse to be captivated by the appealing distraction of social media, my quality of study could improve and take flight. I would have more focused education time, enabling me to develop habits of a great student.
All those who have an account on any social media site can testify of the accidental time wasting that occurs. When opening the app, users promise themselves to only be enchanted for five minutes, suddenly, they realize they have uselessly been in the trance for over an hour. By taking control of my usage, my amount of time wasted would dramatically decrease causing an increase of unused time that could be used in worthy academic pursuits instead of pointless posts.
Lastly, unplugging from social media opens the channels for original thought and opinions producing better students. When using social media, there is a constant buzz of differing ideas endeavoring to persuade followers to concur with their beliefs. This causes a dangerous trap. People’s opinions and very thoughts can be drastically altered for the good and bad. By using a tinted lens, a good student can easily be turned into a bad one.
Social media has power for extreme good if harnessed correctly. It takes excessive self-control. Because of this, one of my 2016 goals is to limit my time of social media.
