My Future is Changed by Emmaly - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

All of my life I have been different from my family. I have noticed that I am interested in different things from them and even think differently. My family is very analytical in their thinking. My mother is an accountant, as such her job id about math and numbers. My father is very scientific and uses that to farm.
My two brothers are very much like my parents, with my older brother, he is interested in science and math and even for a time thought to become a physicist. My younger brother is very natural with math and easily understand math that is hard for me.
My family loves me, they are supportive and I can always count on them. I am just different from them, not being particularly good with math or science. I am much more interested in the arts. My hobbies follow that, with crochet, quilting, knitting, painting, and drawing.
I know that in this day and age, it is hard to be a person like me, whose talents are in the arts. With that I have always thought that I wouldn’t be able to make a living doing something that I love. But my teacher taught me differently.
At Dodge City High School, Ms. Alverez was a Sculpture/Ceramics teacher. I took two classes with her; she was amazing. She was a lot like me in the way that we thought. When she was working with clay, creating something it was amazing to watch, she was at home. I thought, ‘if she can find a way to do what she loves, I can too.’
After that I thought about being a teacher, like her, but found it was not the right fit for me. I continued to look for a way to make a career out of things I was good at. That I found at the Kansas State Fair, a display inspired me. I later started The Needle and Thread, a custom long arm quilting company, and now hope to take business classes at the College to help with running it.
Ms. Alverez taught me that I need to do something I love even if the road is difficult. I will never forget her, and how very inspired I was by her.
