The Purpose of Education by Emma - April 2015 Scholarship Essay
I believe that the purpose of education is three things, explore what is out there, gain more knowledge to be successful, and to become who you want to be.
One of the purposes of education is to explore what is out there. What the options are and what the world has to offer. Education shows us many different aspects of the world, such as, History, Art, Science, English, Languages, and so on. For example, History allows us to see how the world has changed, and how we have benefited from it. It has also allowed us to see who has changed the world, what they were like when they were growing up. It helps us to understand where others have come from and helps us change our world today. Without learning those things, we would never grow.
Another purpose for education would be helping us to gain more knowledge to become successful. In order to be successful you must know how; this done through building confidence which only comes from education itself. How you might ask? Well, whenever a student learns something new, they grab onto it and never let go. They take it with them and test on it, maybe write a paper or two. However, it impacts them and makes them feel intelligent. When you feel intelligent, you feel confident and therefore are successful at the next test on the subject. The same concept travels through life. For example, your boss may ask you to do something and you have no idea how. So, you ask questions, learn how to do it, practice a few times, maybe make mistakes, but then you are ready to do what the boss asked you to do and do it well, Resulting in succeeding at the task that was given. This is how knowledge in a subject leads to becoming successful.
The third and final purpose of education would be, shaping us into who we want to become. When we first start out in school we are exposed to so many new things and ideas. As we progress along the way, we tend to find subjects that we are more confident in. These are the subjects that interest us. We take a liking to them; we may ask questions, we may be happier with the outcome of a project or paper. But, it helps us be shaped into people that become interested in those things and hopefully one day, do something with those interests. That is how we use education to become who we are supposed to be.
Education has many purposes from, becoming who you are, becoming successful, and exploring what is out there. It affects us all in many ways, but most of all, it is something that we never stop doing in our everyday lives.
