Finding My Path in Medicine by Emma - February 2025 Scholarship Essay
Since the beginning of high school, I have taken numerous courses to explore different fields, but one has stood out to me the most—medicine. After taking my first biology class, I became fascinated with the human body and its complexities. As I continued learning, my passion for science deepened, and I began to see myself pursuing a career in family medicine. The ability to combine my love for problem-solving with my desire to help others made this field feel like the perfect fit for me.
To further explore this interest, I began volunteering at the Adventist Glendale Community Free Health Clinic, where I assist low-income individuals with chronic conditions. This experience gave me first hand exposure to patient care and reinforced the importance of empathy, patience, and clear communication in building trust with patients. Witnessing the impact that accessible healthcare can have on underserved communities solidified my commitment to becoming a family physician.
Beyond my experiences in medicine, my journey in STEM has been shaped by personal challenges. Growing up, I was told that math and science were not meant for women. Coming from a low-income household in a small town in Armenia, where access to education was limited, I struggled to see myself in the field. However, seeing the life-changing work of physicians inspired me to push past these barriers. Representation in STEM matters, and I want to be part of the change by pursuing medicine and encouraging others—especially young women—to follow their passions despite societal expectations.
My coursework has only strengthened my dedication. Biology has helped me understand how different systems function together, while chemistry has allowed me to see the science behind medicine. The more I learn, the more I realize how even the smallest changes in the body can have a profound impact on overall health. I am eager to continue expanding my knowledge and developing the skills necessary to provide quality healthcare.
My passion for medicine has not only influenced my academic pursuits but has also shaped my long-term goals. I aspire to become a family physician who serves underserved communities, ensuring that those who need care the most receive it. This journey has taught me resilience, curiosity, and the power of representation, and I am excited to continue learning, growing, and making a meaningful difference in the field of medicine.
