Psychology's Impact by Emma - January 2023 Scholarship Essay

I stood in my kitchen feeling the physiological effects of being in a fight-or-flight situation. I could feel my hunger leave my body, my heart started to beat faster, and I no longer felt tired. I was in a fight-or-flight situation. I have been in a fight-or-flight situation before, but this time was different. In AP Psychology, I had just finished my unit on stress and emotions and now, I have a stronger understanding of how I should handle the times when I am stressed as well as the importance of getting rid of the stressor. So when I felt the impact of stress, I sat down and focused on calming myself down in order to avoid reaching long term stress. I took the stressor out of my life, and my hunger returned, heart beat slowed down, as well as tired.
I believe that everyone should have to take a psychology class due to the way that it makes people think about their own internal feelings as well as caring for other peoples’ feelings. Psychology makes people think about how to better their own health, help other people, as well as looking into how things impact our wellbeing. I believe that psychology teaches people how to be better people in society because they become more empathetic towards other people. Speaking solely for myself, I am able to see that people are not always what they present outwardly. I have to remember to be more patient, and I am able to see that people have their own problems in their lives. I learned about the ways that I could be better or use certain tactics in order to do better on other activities in my life.
Everyone who I have met who has taken a psychology course, talks about how helpful it has been in their own lives. I believe that taking a psychology class would teach people how to be less judgmental, aware, and understanding of other people. Psychology is also a versatile subject which underlies many other classes such as in books or in history.
