Social Media's impact on education by Emma - March 2022 Scholarship Essay

Social media has always been a big part of my life growing up in this generation. Social media has impacted my education the most due to the accessibility and resources it provides. It gives immense ways to share information or communicate with classmates to better understand work. I have had many homework assignments that are based around social media or an app. I have also had a groupchat with all my classmates to discuss classwork and help each other with questions. Furthermore, as a parent it gives them the resources to communicate with teachers and other parents about the education their children are receiving. I know one of my mother’s favorite things about social media in education is the app Powerschool. Powerschool is easily accessible to her on her phone and it shows my class schedule, grades, and attendance. I can not tell you how many times I have gotten a text from her asking why I have a bad grade on an assignment or why I was marked absent for a class I was there for. Social Media has definitely impacted my education in a positive way.

Some advantages to social media in education is the workload that is provided from it. In our generation, we are so involved in social media and our phones. If you were to give my class a book or paper work, we would not be as interested in it as we would if you gave us an assignment online. Moreover, if us students are not as interested, we are not gonna be as involved, leading to us not learning as well. However, this leads to a disadvantage of social media in education. This leads to the fact that many times, students are using social media in class in an inappropriate way. Inappropriate as in, not useful or unproductive. Social media can be so interesting to students that it often distracts them from learning in class. Social Media definitely has its advantages and disadvantages in education, however future generations will need to further add advantages with the increased use of technology.
