Academic Success as a Math Teacher by Emma - March 2021 Scholarship Essay

High school is a time full of academic exploration. Most highschool students spend all four years trying to decide what they want to do. Few figure it out, and fortunately I am one of the few who did.Today, I can say with certainty that I want to become an Engineer. One of the main reasons I discovered my love for math and physics is my academic role model,my Calculus III teacher, Mrs. Zamor. Mrs. Zamor has shown me that math can be fun, you can do anything you set your mind to, and that you don’t need to be the smartest kid in the room to succeed academically.
I remember sophomore year, walking into Mrs. Zamor’s classroom for the first time. I was nervous because I didn’t want to be looked at weird because I was a sophomore in a junior level class. She instantly made me feel welcome and made my days more fun. By the end of sophomore year I realized that I was not only good at math, but I also loved it. I wasn’t ashamed to be a freaky math girl anymore because Mrs. Zamor showed me that it's okay to show your academic success to others.
Mrs. Zamor has also taught me that you can do anything you set your mind to. She has told me many stories about her time at college, and what I find most inspiring is the amount of degrees she has on her wall. She has degrees in almost any subject imaginable! To me this shows how hard working she is not only academically but also in general.
Last but not least, Mrs. Zamor taught me that you don’t have to be the smartest kid in the room to succeed. This year in my Calc. III class I am by no means the smartest kid in the room, but Mrs. Zamore has taught me not to be discouraged academically because of this. She has shown me that academic success is as much a product of hard work as it is intelligence. Because of her, I know that as long as I keep working hard, I should excel in college.
Mrs. Zamor’s academic tenacity and achievements are a part of who she is. She has shown me what true success is, and not just academically. I want to go to college and succeed because she has shown me that I can. That is why I can say with absolute certainty, that she is my academic role model.
