Most Important Piece of Advice by Emma - March 2019 Scholarship Essay
High school can be a scary transition for incoming freshman. There are so many new responsibilities and a whole new building to get used to. Tours are designed to be a tool to help incoming freshman and new students have a first look at what they can expect. As a tour guide you have the ability to ease their stress and help them adapt quicker to their new environment. The literal tour is very important, but a very important part of that, that is sometimes overlooked, is the advice these students are given along the way.
If I lead a tour of my school for the incoming freshman class, there is an endless amount of advice I would have and be willing to share with them. If I was given the opportunity to only tell them one thing, I would find it most important to say do not fear trying new things or having new experiences. In high school the students who get involved in school activities, try things, and out of their comfort zone are the ones who have the best experience. This is something I am able to say I have experienced myself. Trying new things and being brave enough to do that helped me make new friends and learn about myself and my interests.
Knowing that it is okay to try new things and make mistakes makes it more likely that kids will try new things. Being able to say you tried something, whether you succeed or fail feels good and it can be a major growing point for many kids. Entering a new school makes it inevitable for a student to face adversity. Some reassurance from people who have experienced that adversity can go a long way. I believe that telling kids to not be afraid and be bold is advice that can help every kid through their journey. Sometimes it just takes a little push to begin those first few steps in walking into a new adventure.
