Emma Talks by Emma - August 2018 Scholarship Essay
Today I am going to speak on an issue little known to Americans today. It is largely popularized and overlooked as something harmless and joyful. Americans and others all over the world consider this a normality in their everyday life. This everyday activity is going to the Zoo.
Zoos in America and across the world are widely seen as fun and lighthearted. An activity for kids of all ages to see and enjoy the animals that are there to witness. Animals that are trapped behind bars and glass walls and cages.
Most exotic animals in zoos today are not housed the way that they should be. Animals like elephants red thousands of miles to roam as they do in the wild. Monkeys in zoos don’t have acres of tree tops to swing and play in. Lions, giraffes, bears, tigers, and antelope are all other examples of animals who need miles and miles of acreage to roam that they just do not get in zoos. Most zoos provide animals such as these with only one to two acres in contrast to the thousands that they have in the wild.
Secondly, when in a zoo, one would notice there only being one or two of each species of animal present to be viewed or two different species of animal that are in the same enclosure. Animals like elephants, lions, tigers, antelope, and giraffes are surrounded by groups of the same species of animal that they spend their lives with. Animals in enclosures without social lives with more than one or two other animals of its species usually develops mental diseases like depression, anxiety and experience unnatural amounts of stress. For instance when monkeys are left alone without social contact they begin to pace which is a sign of severe stress. When mixing species of animals one animal could harm the other through genetic and health means. An example of this is keeping an elephant of the Asian species and an elephant of the African species in the same enclosure and one of them develops sexual transmitted diseases from intercourse, being a natural thing in the animal kingdom, with the opposite species of elephant.
In conclusion, you should reconsider your plans on a sunny day to enjoy nature in the wild rather than behind glass and bars in zoos.
