Pursue by Emma - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

Ever since I was a young child I had always dreamed of becoming a nurse, and taking care of people. Many of my family members had chosen this profession, including my grandmother, my sister, and two of my great aunts. As time went on I looked into other career options, but they just did not seem to have that spark like nursing did. I continued to go back to the nursing option and it just seemed to fit. Helping people and caring for the wellbeing of others just seemed like the perfect job for me. The thought of never knowing what may come through the hospital door that day, and not knowing who I may encounter is so exciting to me. I love the idea that I may be that patient’s support system. The person they see each and every day, assuring them that everything is going to be okay. I want to build that relationship with patients and get them through whatever situation they might be in. Pursuing this idea, and truly make it a reality is my ultimate goal.
Starting in my junior year as a high school student, I decided to look into a variety of colleges in order to find the right nursing program for me. I narrowed my options down to two schools: Truman State and Missouri State; both located in Missouri. Still undecided, I reluctantly visited the University of Missouri, Columbia with a friend of mine who insisted that I give it a chance. I was never very interested in a giant university, such as Mizzou. I had always thought that smaller would be a better fit for me. After visiting Mizzou’s campus, and learning about all it had to offer, I fell in love. I insisted on taking my parents back again so that they could see how amazing this school was. I was already envisioning myself living there, and thriving on my own. Along with the amazing campus, their nursing program was extraordinary as well. They offered so many hands on opportunities, along with excellent support systems for all students. The University of Missouri, Columbia, was the perfect place for me to pursue my dream of caring for patients as a nurse.
Going to college is not something that is meant for everyone. It is not something to take lightly because everyone else is choosing to take that path. College is meant to be chosen for a purpose. My purpose for attending the University of Missouri, Columbia, is so that I can pursue my dream. I chose the word “pursue” because college is what is going to prepare me for everything I need to know in order to reach the ultimate goal - becoming a nurse. The idea of becoming a nurse and to care for others around me is so important to me. I am so honored that I was fortunate enough to choose this path. I am determined to change someone's life, no matter how big or small. I will pursue my dream and I will make a difference!
