Becoming a Doctor by Emma - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

Choosing a lifelong career can be challenging. Although it was simple for the six-year old version of yourself to decide, as you become more mature and got older the decision quickly becomes tougher. As an adult you have experienced more things than when you were six. Now there’s a family to provide for, bills to pay, and lifelong success to worry about. None of this stress is part of a six-year olds reality, which is what allowed you to answer such a challenging question so quickly.
When I was six I was in kindergarten, the first year of elementary school, and I decided that I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. I liked the idea of being able to work with kids and shape young minds while being in a leadership position. Teachers were always so compassionate towards my classmates and I, and I always respected them for leading me in the right direction.
I’ve always been a natural caregiver towards my peers. Starting at a young age I started taking care of my sisters and helping them with simple tasks. But as I became more mature I decided the teachers union was too political for me. As I went through elementary school and middle school I became more interested in science and social sciences. Pursuing the job of being a doctor would allow me to be able to combine my skills in science, leadership, and caregiving while giving back to society. As I went through high school I went on to take advanced classes in science and social sciences in order to become prepared for my dream job of being a doctor.
The classes I took were very challenging but as I went through high school I found new inspiration to achieve being a doctor. I watched shows like Grey’s Anatomy and House and volunteered in the special needs room in my school. By educating myself I was able to learn about thousands of incurable diseases and about all the people who suffered from these illnesses. This is what allowed me to create my own motivation. Now I have graduated high school and will be attending college this fall in the pre-medicine program. As a result of my hard work I will be able to go to the next step towards being a doctor and earn my degree.
