Money Doesn't Grow on Trees by Emma - March 2016 Scholarship Essay
One of the many barriers in contemporary society preventing my generation from reaching a higher level of education isn’t a lack of intelligence; rather, it is something that limits a majority of the youth population and it is very easily amended: money. Now, money doesn’t grow on trees otherwise a majority of problems regarding education would be solved. When it comes to travelling abroad, one of the most basic issues is the cost of travelling abroad. When faced with the issue of travelling abroad, students should not be forced to travel abroad simply because either they cannot afford it or their major isn’t hinging on whether the student goes to another country and studies or not.
Majors like Art History often require students to have a full 360 degree view of a certain sculpture or an up close view of the painting to see the texture of the paint or acrylic used. The issue is that pictures are not able to provide the necessary information to correctly assume the sculptor’s or painter’s intent and purpose. While forcing students with a major in the liberal arts college to travel abroad may seem like a good idea, the simple fact is that no student of any major should be forced to travel abroad solely because there may not be a way for the student to pay for their education, basic necessities, and experiences abroad.
Unless there is a payment plan in place for those who are studying abroad, paying for the experience and education and possible friendships may seem like a daunting task. It is solely because of the possible lack of funds that students, no matter their major, should not be forced to study abroad.
