Having Dinner With Vincent Van Gogh by Emma - February 2016 Scholarship Essay
If I could have dinner with any historical figure, I would choose Vincent Van Gogh. Being an art student, I know how it can be a struggle to stay encouraged and keep making art, even through all of the failures. Vincent Van Gogh knew that feeling all too well, because he only sold one painting in his lifetime.
Despite all of his popularity today, Van Gogh was a starving artist through his lifetime. I would choose to have dinner with him because I think he is an inspiration to all artists today. He inspires me because of his determined attitude towards art. I would ask him how he stayed motivated, even though his painting never got him anywhere.
I’m curious about how he felt during his lifetime while he was ignored by critics, even though he was very talented and had unique skills. I would ask him about his anxiety and mental health, because despite those problems, he made beautiful works of art. I would tell him that I admire how he pushed through his setbacks and instead of letting them control him, he continued to do what he loved.
Lastly, if I could have dinner with Vincent Van Gogh, I would ask him about how he created his own style of art. I would ask about how he feels now that he is one of the most famous historical figures today, especially in the art world.
I would choose to have dinner with Vincent Van Gogh because of his impact that he’s made, and to show him the inspiration that he has given me to continue my passion for art.
