An Evening Out with Adolf Hitler by Emily - February 2016 Scholarship Essay
I have always been intrigued by the ruthlessness of such a powerful man, Adolf Hitler. Although I am not from Jewish heritage, I come from German descent and both of my grandfathers served in World War II. I am ever so curious about the ways and mind set of such a murderer who induced my beloved grandfathers to war and has cursed the German culture for the rest of time. I would most definitely enjoy taking a seat with the one man who dictated the largest genocide in human history, that is as long as he promises not to exterminate me on account of my brunette hair.
In researching Adolf in the past, I have found it very interesting how his childhood could have played a role in his sickening adulthood. He was a withdrawn and introverted child who took great interest in the fine arts (in which his father did not approve). As he was rejected from the Academy of Fine Arts twice he promptly ran out of money. After joining the German army as an Austrian resident, he became a decorated soldier. He found the Treaty ending World War I degrading and to respond, he joined and led groups who had similar beliefs as himself. When the German Great Depression hit, this provided the perfect opportunity for Hitler to get a foot in the door in German politics, in which he did. He took full advantage of his position and gained control over the executive and legislative branches of government where eventually the government became a dictatorship caused by his intimidation. In 1934, he finally came to power as the leader and chancellor of Germany. In 1938, he invaded Poland which was eventually declared the start if World War II.
If I had the opportunity to speak with this manipulative, yet powerful man, I would ask him if he thought the events in his childhood influenced how he viewed politics. I would inquire what compelled him to exterminate so many innocent people. Lastly, I would question his awareness of the global impact he was making and the imprint he would leave in the history books.
Dinner with Adolf Hitler, would not only shed light on the questions that have been raised in my head, but the entire world. Although he is still an extremely hated man, he represents a crucial part of human history and would provide me with an enthralling conversation over dinner.
