A Dinner of Thanks by Emily - February 2016 Scholarship Essay

Many historical figures call to mind when one thinks of the past. From Lincoln and Washington to Bell and Edison. Yet as a woman I would personally love to have dinner with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, leader of the Women's Rights Movement with Susan B. Anthony. What would make a dinner special with Elizabeth Stanton is that I could personally thank her for her speeches that moved thousands, especially the Senica Falls Convention in New York on July 19, 1848. My favorite quote from that speech was when she said, "to declare our right to be free as man is free, to be represented in the government which we are taxed to support, to have such disgraceful laws as give man the power to chastise and imprison his wife, to take the wages which she earns, the property which she inherits, and, in case of separation, the children of her love; laws which make her the mere dependent on his bounty." (Greatamericandocuments.com). This is my favorite quote because it shows the true injustice that these men obtained while the women who are paying the same taxes and working around the house are receiving nothing in return except for control from their husbands.
Due to the Women's Rights Movement I am able to proudly say that I attend an all girls school that encourages the empowerment of women. Our motto is even "one girl can change the world" and this is proven with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, for she is a woman who has defiantly changed the world. I would love to have dinner with Elizabeth so that I could thank her and show her how women have progressed and succeeded all thanks to her and her empowering words and determination.
