Emily's Future in Architecture by Emily - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

My personal inspiration for architecture as my major began when I was a young child as I started to learn and understand the things around me. Architecture is what I have always wanted to pursue once I understood its benefits and beauty. I grew up around several Hispanics who worked for construction companies because it is a common Hispanic male dominant job that several men in families work in, including my own family members and neighbors. Growing up with that around me impacted the way I view the world; I started to learn how architecture plays a pivotal role in our lives, such as cultural identity, representation of society, and our mental health. Since then I realized I wanted to have a career related to STEAM, a career that contains creativity, drawing and math, that would bring me happiness while learning how to make the world a better place with architecture. Ever since I was in elementary school, I have enjoyed the idea of creating several projects and drawing several drawings of ideas that have a deeper meaning. Drawing and creating projects bring me comfort and a way of relaxing during my free time, especially when I do certain projects for others that cause them to have a smile on their faces. My future career goal after graduation is to hopefully major in Architecture as a Bachelor’s Degree at the New Jersey Institute of Technology this upcoming fall of 2025. I have always looked forward to having higher education, with higher education not existing in my family, I would love to change that, for the better of my future and the future of the world. I love learning about the history of architecture, including its benefits to our lives and just learning in general. I am a part of an organization called Outdoor Equity Alliance, where I am doing the second phase of the program which is their internship to learn more about the importance of trees in our lives and community, by helping plant trees in my city. It is a program that impacted my career path in STEAM because of the impact and importance that architecture has when it comes to trees being planted and also cut down. As an architect, I would love to include trees in several communities and teach others about the importance that trees are for our environment and lives. As an architect I hope to impact our environment for the better.
