The Other Side of the Boston by Emily - April 2025 Scholarship Essay
The thought of leaving the people who looked down on my family and I for years due to our religious beliefs would appear to be a beautiful thing to any outsider looking in. The complete opposite was the case, emotions of devastation, fear, and even irony can explain what my heart felt when it made the move from the state of Massachusetts to Texas. It was only my freshman year of high school when I began an interest in the inner workings of politics and the power of the government, specifically in my second semester. During this time, my intermediate family moved from the state of Massachusetts to Texas. What strongly influenced this drastic and sporadic move was my mother’s wrongful termination from her job, as well as her inability to work in the state of Massachusetts. My mother’s nursing job at a very valuable hospital in Boston required my mom to choose between violating her own beliefs, or losing her job. Due to the passionate ideology of my mother, as well as the company’s shameful disacknowledgement of her loyalty to the business for the last 22 years, she was dismissed from her workplace. Eventually my mother filed a lawsuit against this infamous hospital, but sadly, was dismissed. Outraged and discouraged, my family and I moved to the small city of Peaster, Texas. Here, my mother is free to work as the astonishingly qualified charge nurse she has become, and our family’s faith has grown and became stronger.
